Reading at 15 months

Or rather, "reading" at 15 months. At bedtime this week, Chase has been picking out picture books to "read." He sits on Chris or my lap and turns the pages himself. What's most fun is that he "reads" the pictures to us. He turns to a page with a fish and makes fishy lips. He points to a picture of a ball and says "ba. ba. ba." He sees a picture of a cat and says "meow." Same goes for pictures of:
- shoes ("shhhhhoooo")
- apple ("aaaaappo)
- dog ("uh uh uh", which is supposed to be "woof woof")
- baby ("baby")
- banana ("nana")

Over this week, he's also perfected "put it back" when he takes something out of it's proper place. Sweet boy.

Trains and the finger

Came home this afternoon to two more new tricks.

"What do trains say?": Chase says "choo choo!!"

"How old are you": Chase puts up his pointer finger to show 1

Think Chase might be a little on showing that he's one but still, Zlatka is my hero.

Nite Nite

Chase's newest fun trick: when we say it's time for a nap or bed, Chase sweetly says "nite nite" (although it sounds like "nie nie"). Then he blows a kiss. Sweetest darn thing!

If you're happy and you know it...

... clap your hands!
.... stomp your feet!
...... spin around!

Zlatka's got the kids performing now and it's the cutest darn thing ever. Chase loves to do rounds and rounds of these 3 verses. I wonder what we'll come home to next.

Completely separately, Chase LOVES LOVES LOVES cars, trucks, anything with wheels - this started very early on and hasn't let up. His latest obession is matchbox cars. It started when his Grandpa Wayne bought him a set. He was only able to play with them when we visited.

Then, Zlatka takes the kids to Pine Lake Park where they have a finger skate table for kids. A lot of kids use it for their little matchbox cars. Most of the kids at the table are maybe 4, 5, 6 years old. Recently, Chase wanted to play and walked right up and took a car away from an older boy. The boy pushed him down. Chase just got up again and tried to take another car. Sigh... hopefully he'll learn not to take on bigger kids while the lesson isn't too painful :)

So, we bought him a set of 5 matchbox cars for home and he loves them. He drives them around making motor sounds. I think we'll have to take him to the car show this year!

Humpty Dumpty

My dad took Chase swimming at his club when we visited over the 4th of July weekend. They had a ball together and Chase got to show off what he's learned in swim lessons. Dad, this one is for you!

Chase turns 1

I am so so late with this post. I've been procrastinating on purpose - likely because I don't feel like I could ever do such a momentous milestone justice... but then my dad laid on the guilt trip about lack of photos so here I am, a month late. It's the push I needed to just get it done, however incomplete it might be.

What mother doesn't say "I can't believe it's been a year"? Every day I look at Chase and am amazed at the little person he's become. I never thought I'd be the person take such joy in seeing the tiniest development milestones. Over the past few months, he's 100% turned into a toddler. Although he's been walking since February, he was still very much a baby. But coming off bottles, signing, talking, following directions, making decisions, exerting independence has all pushed him past babyhood. I'ts so fun, I can't even be sad about it. I wish I could capture all of them but clearly that's not possible. I will, however, make myself a list for prosterity. :)

- got his first haircut just before his 1st birthday
- had his first teeth cleaning and learned he has already chipped a (front) tooth (April 13th)
- took his first tumble head over heels down a set of stairs and as a result, took his first trip to urgent care (the night before his first birthday party). that was the scariest moment of my life.
- had a fabulous 1st birthday party despite the late night at urgent care. started out quite cranky but once we broke out the Radio Flyer, all was good in the world again. Chase did a fabulous job demolishing his cake - a fabulous vanilla bean cake with whipped cream and fresh berries and a light buttercream frosting. YUM.
- 100% off bottles at his first birthday. I couldn't have been more relieved to stop washing bottles.
- ate like a garbage disposal. He grew almost an inch and 1/2 a shoe size over the 3 weeks after his first birthday!
- Two sessions of swim lessons. He loved the first one but has been hot and cold ever since. he doesn't love not being able to touch the bottom but doesn't mind being dunked under.
- at the end of April, found a love for shaking his head 'no' and laughing, laughing, laughing. He's over that now and actually shakes his head when he means no.
- also began walking backwards until he ran into something and then would just begin walking forward again. Not sure why I thought that was so hilarous.
- developed a love for rocks... one in each hand and preferably one in his mouth. he's since learned that rocks do not go in mouths.
- discovered his echo but standing at the stairway railing and calling into the foyer (late april)
- began holding his baby monitor up to his ear like a phone. clearly watching us very carefully (may 2)
- learned that when he drops a rock from the wagon while it's rolling, he'll lose it forever (may 2)
- began putting his hands on his head when you ask "where's your head?" (mid may)
- loves to play reverse hide and seek. I stay where I am and he leaves and comes back to find me exactly where I was
- we're lucky that we've been able to get Chase used to being watched but a variety of people. he's done amazingly well with going to the Pro Club day care, staying with a few different back-up nannies, 3 sets of grandparents.
- Chase is in love with Chris' guitar; Chris has been letting him strum and has told him its a good way to get chicks
- had his first taste of a real chocolate cookie from Paradise Bakery (mid may)
- loves loves loves fish. Pan fried tilapia, cod fish sticks, any kind of salmon
- had our first disasterous airplane experience. Chase has taken 4 trips via plane. It wasn't until he learned to walk that it became difficult to have him as a lap baby. All he wanted was to get down and walk around. Of course the flight was right during bedtime and he couldn't sleep. It was this trip to Scottsdale that we decided we'd always get him his own seat. When strapped down in his car seat, he's a dream.
- Chase took his first (of many) trips to Scottsdale. Loved running around the house, playing with his cousins and paying in the kiddie and big pool.
- had the cutest laughing streak while fast asleep (end of May)
- as we began June, Chase fell head over heels in love with berries. any and all berries but especially with picking his very own strawberries from our little patch in the backyard and eating them stems and all
- can't believe we waited until after chase turned 1 to hire a neighborhood babysitter! We put Chase to bed and the sitter just watched TV until we got home from a night out. Brilliant.
- Chase has loved the remote controls for a while now but now he knows to point them at the TV and push buttons. yes, he changes the channel. Sometimes he stops on cartoons but I think it's sheer luck when it happens. for now.
- June 8: first time I noticed that Chase actually said "daddy" when Chris walks into the room. he'll say Mommy but he's much more inclined towards Daddy. For now.
- June 15: i got a call from the King County Sheriff's dept asking if I had an emergency. Chase dialed 112 from my cell, which apparently is an emergency number when the phone is locked. It was requested that I take the phone away from Chase.
- June 15: officially added the word "berries" to his repetoire. At this point, it sounded like "berrbies" though.
- June 17: had a 30 sec crying jab while fast asleep. I prefer the laughing so glad this is a rare event.
- Chase now recognizes a milkshake or smoothie and will ask for a sip and drink until I stop him. Gee, do I drink to many milkshakes??
- After several trips to Portland and Eugene in May and June, Chase is a dream in the car. yes, we time drives around naptime and i have snacks prepared but I still count my lucky stars
- June 22: For the first time while grocery shopping, Chase tells me he's hungry (signing) so for the first time, I broke into a box of crackers while still shopping to hold him over until dinner. I'm sure I'll do this again.
- June 27th: 2nd haircut... shorter, not very straight but still very cute
- June 29: Chase has waving down pretty well but this morning waved to the crowd on the Today Show. he applaudes with the TV as well.
- mid June: began feeding himself with a spoon. I put the food on the spoon if I want to avoid massive clean up.
- late June: I realize that Chase knows the neighborhood play structures. Zlatka takes him every day!
- July 4: goes for his first innertube ride behind Grandpa Wayne's boat... also gets to drive the boat and best of all, push the horn
- Also figured out how to clip together the buckles on his car seat and stroller and life jacket. Hoping he doesn't learn to unclip them anytime soon
- has developed a LOVE for cars, trucks, anything with wheels. such a boy.
- Got his first molar June 27th. he had trouble teething it but his second molar soon followed and I didn't even realize it was coming. He's drooling again now so I suspect another is coming soon
- Word explosion: Daddy, Mommy, baby, up, down, shoe, yummy, Ziggy (zzzzzz), diaper, hi, ya, berry, banana (nana), out, bye (waves), more (sign), please (sign), eat (sign), all done (sign), milk (sign), thank you (sign), signs please and more together, blows kisses...
- Understands so much:
   - when we say breakfast, lunch, dinner, hungry, he signs "eat"
   - when I sign berry, he says "berry"
   - when I say put it back, he puts whatever he has back where he found it (or he choses not to but most times he does)
   - when we say what does dog say, he makes whta passes as a woof woof noise (uh uh uh)
   - when we say what does cat say, he makes a high pitched "meewwwww" noice
   - when we say what does fish say, he makes fishy lips
   - when we ask "where's your head," "where's your nose," "where's your belly," "where's your feet" he points to the right parts
   - we can ask him if its bedtime and if he's ready, he'll sign please
   - when we ask him to put his shoes on, he'll go find his shoes (if he's seen them recently), bring them to us and sit down for us to put the shoes on. he loves his shoes because it means he gets to go outside!
   - when I ask him to close a drawer, cabinet door, etc, he'll close it
   - when I tell him to leave his frog in his crib, he'll drop it
   - when I tell him it's time to brush teeth, wash face, he goes into his bathroom, stands in front of the counter and says "up" (he sits on the counter when we brush his teeth)
   - most recently, if you start singing "if you're happy and you know it..." he'll start clapping his hands
   - but does not yet understand he must hold hands. He takes off running down our driveway and into the street and if we attempt to hold his hand while anywhere, he'll give us about 30 secs before he pulls the sit down and pull arms down maneuver. stinker.

SUCH FUN!!! I love all this stuff.

Swimming, shoes & socks, stomach bug

I feel like I should create a private Twitter account just to capture all the crazy new (mostly fun) things Chase does/learns/experiences each day. In the meantime, some of the highlights over the past few weeks:

  • First swim lessons. His only experience with bodies of water so far have been where he could touch bottom (Lake Billy Chinook Beach, Seaside Beach, bathtub, shower). When we got into the pool, he wasn't quite sure what to make of it and kept kicking his legs as if to try to reach bottom. Soon, he got the hang of it and began to really enjoy himself. No one in the class cried and the kids all seemed to love the singing, the moving, the splashing. Chase learned to kick as I took him across the pool with this arms around my neck; to reach and grab the little floating balls; and to hold on to the pool edge by himself. Can't wait for our next class in a couple of weeks (we skip Easter weekend)
  • Shoes and socks. Chase LOVES to go outside. He seems to know that putting shoes and socks on means that we're going outside. If you ask him to get his socks and shoes, he gets so very excited and will go find them. He's good about remembering where they are if he's recently seen them. And just this week, he's figured out that they go on his feet. He will get them, and put them on his feet - not put his feet inside them but put them on top of his feet. It's so cute and we were very impressed. We'll still have to help him get his feet into them for quite some time yet ;)
  • The stomach bug. We're not sure where he got it from (party, park, pool??) but he got it. I got puked on for the very first time and it was unpleasant to say the least. He's a bit clingy right before he gets an upset stomach but otherwise, is still himself... still sleeping and eating on the same schedule and easily distracted - especially if we take him outside. After he threw up 4 times, we put him on a Pedialyte-only diet for 6 hours. Then introduced a little formula and crackers. He did fabulously. Now, he's on a bland diet of applesauce with rice cereal, crackers, cheerios, Gerber puffs, Pedialyte and formula. Luckily, his diapers aren't too bad and we haven't as many as I thought we would. Pedialyte tip for others: mix 1/3 flavored (I like the apple because it's not colored... who wants to see purple grape flavor come back up if it does??) and 2/3 unflavored. When Chase was really thirsty after being banned from eating/drinking anything but Pedialyte, he would guzzle the apple flavor straight but afterwards he seemed to think it was too cloying. He'll drink the apple/unflavored mix no problem now. One funny thing that happened when he was on the 1 tbsp every 15 min dosage: he got SO thirsty that he would get upset, push off the couch where we were sitting, walk to the fridge and stand there crying until I got up and got out the cup of Pedialyte. It wasn't so funny at the time but it's just amazing how clever he is. I think he's on the mend now - fingers crossed!

Gong Gong's early celebration for Chase's 1 yr

A few weeks agom my dad, step mom, brother Victor and grandma came up for a visit to celebrate Chase's first birthday a bit early. What a great visit! My step mom made an amazing Vietnamese meal and my cousin Hanna joined us. Chase had the BEST time playing with my dad. He took maybe 10 minutes during lunch to assess his grandpa and then they were best friends. Chase had the FUNNIEST reaction to my grandma. My grandma would jokingly scold him, Chase would glower at her at her, and then they (and all of us watching) would both laugh and laugh. They did it over and over again. It was as if they were having their own conversation. It was hilarious. I wish I would have thought to capture it on video.

Dad and company brought with them a birthday cake and gifts for Chase. We presented them to him between dinner and bed time. He was super interested in the candle but not so much the cake. We gave him a taste of the whipped cream but he wasn't interested. Maybe he was full from dinner? He did love his new soft baby seal and Cat in the Hat though! And I loved all the cute cute cute 24 month clothes dad brought - all from my dad's favorite store: Polo. I'm going to have a mini gong gong on my hands! LOL.

My dad also brought old pictures of his family - my grandparents, aunts and uncles from when they were young. My grandma was quite the pretty girl! Somehow, my aunt and uncle found an old relative in China with these photos so they took photos of them and printed them out for my dad. What a great way to capture and share family treasures. Most all my families photos were lost in the move (aka escape) from Vietman.

It was a great weekend. I wish we could have them up here more often but we just live too far away. Pictures up soon I hope.. we just bought a new external hard drive (1 Terabyte - yikes!) so are in the process of transferring all our files over... we clearly have waaaaay to many pictures and videos ;)

11 months

Chase is now 11 months old and just keeps getting more and more fun. I didn't think toddlerhood would descend on us until after his first birthday but his walking has come hand in hand with so much independence. Truly, gone is the stage where he was all shrieks, laughs, giggles and fussiness. Now, he can express himself and interact with us in so many more ways and even more incredible, he consistently makes decisions and act on them. It's a striking change and every day, we discover more amazing things.

Highlights over the past month:
  • Chooses which books: Chase gets 3 books before bed and I let him choose between two books for each selection. I'll hold up two books and he'll point to the one he wants. The past week, his selections have been "The Going to Bed Book," "The Little Quack" and of course, "Goodnight Moon" - in that order. Generally, 1/2 way through the Goodnight Moon, he looks at the lamp as the signal that he's ready for lights out and we say goodnight to all the grandparents, the cats, to each other and into the crib he goes. I love that he's able to communicate what book he wants even though he can't yet speak. It seems to make reading time a bit more special.
  • Baby sign: We've been doing some sign language with Chase since he was about 6 months old. He seemed to understand the sign for 'milk' and 'all done' pretty early on. But now he's really consistently signing 'more' and 'all done' himself. He's not doing the signs perfectly but close enough and at the right times that we understand what he's saying. And I'm told by my baby sign instructor that is development. He's less consistently signing 'milk' when he wants it... he signs it sometimes when he wants it but mostly when he's drinking it. I don't know what I find that so funny but I laugh every time he does it because well, at by that time, I already know he wants the milk ;)
  • Running: With his baby waddle, he walks like a duck. And more recently, he's been running like a duck. And he's falling a lot. Most times he doens't seem to mind but I forsee lots of bruises in our future - especially on his knees. He's picking up a lot of speed but his balance isn't quite there yet. He looks like the cutest little drunk.
  • Following instructions: I didn't really notice it until Zlatka pointed it out but he understands so so much now. More than I expected. He actually listens and follows simple instructions. It's blowing me away. Point and say "go get the ball/duck/frog" and off he'll go to get it for you. Say "roll the ball" and he'll push it away from him (but not necessarily towards you :) Say "let's go brush teeth and wash face" and he'll trot off to the bathroom. Tell him "it's diaper time" and he won't squirm on the changing table. Hold him over his crib and say "drop Froggie; Froggie says in bed" and he'll drop his beloved Frog back into his crib. He's not yet listening to "no" yet though (will he ever?). He LOVES the spice drawer in the kitchen and my makeup drawer in the bathroom. So far, my attempts to teach him those are off limits have failed.
  • Favorite foods: So far, his favorite foods include plain full fat yogurt, texas casserole, peeled grapes, kiwi, plums, Fig Newmans and tonight, I found that fish sticks were a hit. He'll eat lots of other foods but these are ones that I've noticed that he gets super excited about. He used to love bananas but seem to prefer these new fruits now. Funny enough, I've found that he will get more excited by a food if I have to blow on it first. Not sure if he just thinks that's funny or if he has a positive association with something he liked that was too hot to serve right away.  It'll be interesting to see how his tastes change as he hits the pickier stages. For now, it's kind of fun to experiment. He was less than impressed with my attempt at making coconut lentil soup but I'll try it again and see what happens.
  • First real shoes: On the 14th, we took Chase to Nordstroms to be fitted for his first pair of real shoes. They measured his feet, gave him a stuffed "Nordie" doll (anyone know what that thing is??), and a balloon. We walked out of there with a cute pair of blue Stride Rites. And wow, seriously? $50 for a pair of shoes he'll grow out of in a few months? That's more than some pairs of my shoes! He seems to like them though.
  • Makes friends: Chase doesn't get to see his grandparents as much as we'd like him to so when he recently saw my mom, step-dad, dad, step-mom, grandma fir the first time in a long while, I was happy to see that he didn't shy away. He was cautious but didn't cry or hide. He did take his time to study each less-than-familiar face and look at my reaction to each person before warming up. Once the analysis was done, he'd be happy to play, laugh and stay with them if I left the room. It's important to me that he know his grandparents well so this was really great to see.
  • 6 teeth: Somehow Chase got another tooth on the bottom and another on the top without either Chris or I noticing. Zlatka didn't even notice. Looking back, he was clearly teething in Sun Valley but I thought it was just a cold and I also assumed we'd get more of a break after his first 4 came in. I'm glad that these 2 didn't give him as much trouble. I hope it gets easier with each tooth. I remember how sad he was when his first one came in!
  • Have baby, will travel: So far (knock on wood) Chase has been pretty easy to travel with. Maybe it's because we've tortured him with so many darn roadtrips to Oregon, it's now built into his nature. Maybe the routine we have at bedtime helps. Whatever it is, I'm really thankful since we have him sleeping in a foreign room about once a month between trips to Portland, Eugene, Sun River, Sun Valley and soon, Scottsdale. Aside from that horrid 6-hour drive to Portland during the holiday snow storm, Chase has also be super tolerant of us strapping him into his car seat for hours. We'll have to reward him with a trip to Disneyland in a few years.
  • Ankle-biter! Well, thigh-biter. I forgot to mention that I have a contusion on my thigh from Chase biting me! I really don't think he did it on purpose. He was pushing his face into his little stuffed frog while hugging my leg. He really chomps down on that frog, especially when teething. Well, I think he got me instead. OUCH!! He hasn't done it again since and let's hope it stays that way. That little booger has some sharp teeth!
  • Peek-a-poo: It seems like Chase has always been a big fan of peek-a-boo. We'd put something over his face, he'd pull it off and we'd say peek-a-boo! He's now initiating the game himself, which is so fun to see. Sometimes he doesn't quite cover his eyes completely but he still expect you to say those magic words. And it just cracks him up. I love it.

I'm super behind in uploading pictures. Perhaps tomorrow. We just had a fantastic visit with my dad, step-mom, brother and grandma too. My dad and Chase just have the best best best time together. It was sad to see them go. Pictures and an update on that soon.

10 months

Chase turned 10 months old on Feb 19th so I'm behind in updating the blog. Like every parent out there, I keep thinking that each new age is the funnest one. Chase just keeps discovering and learning new things and it's the most amazing thing to watch. I keep wondering when I'll stop being in awe of the littlest things but he'll do something new and it just kills me. Highlights since my last post:

  • Little walker. Chase took his first series of steps just before his 10 month birthday but already is walking as much as he is crawling now. He's still doing the funny bear walk (and is quite fast at it!) but has SO much fun on two feet. He keeps his arms out for balance and will clap and laugh and laugh.
  • The right way to descend. He's learned the proper way to crawl down the stairs now. He's loved crawling up them since his grandmas taught him over Thanksgiving but it was only recently that he figured out that he needs to descend feet first. He still prefers climbing up though.
  • Big laughs. He's developed this hearty and slightly insane laugh. He particularly loves it when I jump out and scare him with a "boo!" Last night in the bathtub, Chris had to come see what was up after a game of "put the turtle in the cup and take the turtle out of the cup" caused Chase to laugh and laugh and laugh. I'd tell him to put his turtle bath toy in, and he'd do it and laugh like mad; then again when I told him to take the turle out. I need to capture his crazy laugh on video. It's infectious. I love finding new ways to get this laugh out of him.
  • Real food. He's decided he's done with baby food. No more mush for this little boy! If we're eating it, he wants it. It's as if he knows the food that comes on silverware or that needs to be blown on is better than mush fed by a baby spoon. He's just smarter than we give him credit for :) He hasn't turned away any new food. Last night, he tried and LOVED the gourmet veggie pizza from Papa Murphy's. Tonight, he had curry chicken, carrots and apples with brown rice. I love that he's at the point now where he can eat just about every thing we eat. I still cook better for him than I do for us though ;)
  • Knows what he wants. I'm not sure when it happened but he just doesn't seem to be a baby anymore. He's so aware and makes his own decisions now. It's unbelievable to be see him so smoothly see what he wants and know exactly how to get it. For example, he knows his frog lives in his crib and will go directly there, pull himself up and reach through the slats to pull him out. He knows which drawers are his to play with in the kitchen and our bathroom. He goes straight to them and opens them. He just knows and does it. As a result, he's so independent now.
  • Smarter than I expect. Along these same lines, I am constantly surprised when he proves that he knows more than I think he does. When I read to him, I often point things out. Now when I read certain books he'll point or touch the pictures I'm talking about. He knows the red balloon and the kittens in The Goodnight Moon; the eyebrows and paws in That's Not My Monster; the fins and tail in That's Not My Dinosaur; the duck in The Little Quack as examples. If I point and say follow the cat, he goes. It's amazing to see his little mind work.
  • Bad mommy moment. Sometimes I stupidly leave him on his own because he can mostly handle it. But one morning, I turned my back while he was playing in our closet (not baby proof because the door is usually closed) and pulled a shoe rack on top of himself. It was my first awful bad mommy moment but we luckily escaped without a black eye. He got a little scrape on his eye lid and I learned a big lesson. I can continue to let him play by himself but need to keep him within sight!
  • Sun Valley. He's taken his 3rd airplane flight and visited his 4th state. On the trip out, Chase had his own seat but on the return, he was on my lap. Chase had a good time looking out the window, snacking and took a short nap on the flight home. Over this last weekend, we went to Sun Valley with the Knolls and Stemmermanns. Three couples and three kiddos 9-10 months old made for quite a trip. We made quite a sight going through security! All the kiddos did amazingly well on the plane (no tears/screaming) and adjusted well to the new environment, despite runny noses due to colds and/or teething. For some reason, Chase and Taylor took especially long naps during the day and still slept their usual 11-12 hours at night. The altitude maybe? All the adults got a ski day in as well as a night out. It was a great trip! Chase will add a 4th airplane ride and a 5th state when we head to Scottsdale in May.
  • Kisses. Since my return from my first business trip away from Chase, he's been very generous with kisses. He won't always give them on demand but what's so darn cute is that he always give me a look like "I'm going to give you a present now" and then bestow an open-mouth kiss on me. He can make the kiss sound but he hasn't yet connected that with his kisses. Zlatka tells the kids that fishies make those kissy noises.
  • Accident-prone. Now that Chase has moved beyond a hesitant few steps to trips across the room or down the hall, he's picking up speed and perhaps becoming a bit over-confident. He's bonked his head more times over the past week than I'd like to see. I'm trying hard not to be "that" overprotective mom and he helps by recovering quickly. He's wails when it happens but then is easily distracted. More to come I suppose.

I'm sure there are more but it's getting late. If I think of more, I'll have to update so I capture the memories before I forget them. Like Lisa, I plan to print all these out to supplement Chase's baby book. Pictures and new videos to come soon (I hope).

First steps

While Chase has taken a step or two from sofa to ottoman over the past week or so, it wasn't until Chris and I were out to dinner for Valentine's Day that he took his first real series of steps. As Chris and I were pulling out of the driveway, Zlatka came running out the front door. When I went back to see what was going on, she yelled "Chase took two steps!!." We laughed and went on our way. When we got home later that evening, Zlatka informed us that Chase took 4 steps while standing in the middle of the room. How fun! Of course, crazy parents that we are, we've been making him give us repeat performances and he's turned 4 steps into 10+.

Finally, tonight we were able to catch it on video. The little man is just so happy with himself; how could you not be happy for him? I can't believe he's toddling around just before his 10 month birthday! I'm just one proud mama.

Love is in the air

After my first business trip away from Chase, I came home Wednesday afternoon to the sweetest sights. When I got home, Chase was still napping, so I took a quick rest on the couch until I heard him wake up and 'talking' with Zlatka. I peeked into his room and Zlatka saw me first so she said "surprise!! Look who's here!" Chase looked over and gave me the sweetest toothy grin. Then he looked back at Zlatka as if to say "Yay, my mom's home!" He was still rosy-cheeked and sleepy eyed from his nap but his smile couldn't have been any bigger. He smiled back at me and then back to Zlatka a couple of times before holding his arms out to me. Then, when I reached for him he threw his arms around me and gave me a tight hug (the boy really loves hugs). Although he's given lots of kisses, I was never really sure if he truly understood the meaning behind them. But he kept giving me his sweet sloppy kiss over and over again and giggling... more than he ever has in the past. I now have no doubt that he understands what he's communicating. It was the best reunion ever. I wish I had it on video tape. Almost makes it worth leaving him... almost. :)

Then we went downstairs into the "classroom" and I noticed that Zlatka had put red and pink hearts up on the walls and windows. It was very cutely decorated for Valentines Day. When I noticed the laminated pictures of animals taped to the table and toy tubs, I asked Zlatka about them. She said she bought the pictures at the dollar store and laminiated them.... and that she put them up for V-day "because they show love." I hadn't thought that deeply about it but yes, the pictures showed mommy animals nuzzling their babies and they most definitely did show love. How cute is that? That Zlatka is the best ever.

Proof of that: Zlatka is watching Chase and Taylor tomorrow night as a gift to us. It'll be nice to have a parents-night out! Happy Valentine's Day!

P.S.: Chase is standing up a storm but no steps taken yet. We're keeping our eyes open!

My little teether

Aye aye aye! Chase is working on his 4th tooth. The top teeth seem to be more difficult. He's less cranky in general than he was with the bottom teeth but I think it's only because he's used to the feeling of teething. However, the teeth are taking longer and the first top tooth actually bled :( Poor little guy. The pattern continues that I have to get up and comfort him one night per tooth. This morning Chris tried to rock him back to sleep after he woke up crying at around 3:30am. But eventually, I had to go in, give some Motrin and snuggle with the little one while we both slept in the rocker for an hour. Then I was able to put him back in his crib and he woke up happy as ever at 7:30. I just don't get it. We hope we get a rest with teeth after #4 comes in.

In happier news, the guy is so close to walking. I can't believe it. He can stand up without assistance and with toys in his hands. He's bear-walking (on hands and feet instead of hands and knee) which is hiliarous to watch.

The other thing that cracks me up lately is his little "i'm getting something I'm not supposed to" laugh. I give him the run of the downstairs (except the entry to the stairs are blocked) while I'm in the kitchen cooking or whatever. We're generally childproofed. Every once in a while, I'll hear a "heh heh heh heh" coming from somewhere. When I go look into it, there's a 75% chance he's found a remote control, phone or camera. He's so happy about it, I hate to take it away from him. But then I do :) He'll get a measuring spoon instead.

He also knows "his" drawer in the kitchen. Like everyone else with kids, we give him the tupperware drawer and he pulls stuff out and puts stuff in. I'll hide measuring spoons, scoops or whatever in there so he can find "treasure."

Chris and I are getting in a pretty good rhythm in the morning. Whoever drops off feeds so the other makes the bottle. Then Chase plays upstairs (he has the run of the upstairs with exception of the office) while we get ready... he likes to search out remotes and phones but also pull open our hairdryer drawer and chew on my hairbrush, push buttons on my alarm clock and on the TV. He'll also follow the cats up and down the hallway. It's nice that he has playmates :)

What else can I share? Ah, we're excited to sign Chase up for swim lessons since he loves the water so much. He dunks himself in the bathtub now, which is kinda funny to watch. We can't get into lessons until late Feb at the earliest. I'm not a huge fan of the water so Chris will go in the pool while I play papparazzi.

I have a crazy two weeks at work - two full days and business dinner this week and then am in Vegas for 4 days next week for a big event (which means a bunch of work getting ready for it this week). But in the middle of this chaos, we have a visit from Chase's Grandma Mema which will be great fun. She won't believe how much he's changed! And then Chase has his very 1st birthday party to attend at Gymboree - that should be interesting.

So, that's a quick update at Casa H. Hope all is well with everyone!

9 months

Chase turned 9 months old on Monday - wow how time does fly! I was late scheduling his appointment so we couldn't get in until today. The doctor couldn't be happier with his growth and development.

Most exciting news is that his 3rd tooth is about to pop. Zlatka was correct that it's the upper right. Dr. Burnside saw it right away. The top teeth have taken longer to come out and despite the cold that came with this one, he never got as completely miserable as he did with his first. Maybe his 4th will be even easier. I can only hope.

He's apparently pretty early on all things physical - he's able to stand for a good amout of time without support now (loves to do this in the bathtub which makes me nervous), has been "cruising" for a couple of months now. He's less interested in walking with help, unless he's pushing something; he'd much rather crawl. He knows he can power himself anywhere and it's guaranteed he'll make a beeline for the stairs if left to his own devices. He can climb up the stairs with speed and precision but hasn't yet figured out how to get down backwards. We soothe lots of bonks and bumps just as much as we "shake it off."

He's doing well with "language" if you can even call it that. He loves to say "all done" which sounds like "aah duh." When I've said "duck; get the duck" in the bathtub, he'll bypass his other toys and pick up his duck. It's arguable whether he truly understands but as his mom, I tend to think so! He's not saying "mama" as much as I'd like but sure likes "da da" still.

She was very happy with the variety of foods he's eating. I like to make sure he gets mostly organic, free-range, fresh foods (sucker for marketing maybe by why take a chance?) so that means Chris and I are getting a lot of that too. He's starting to eat a lot of what we eat. He loves grilled cheese sandwiches made with colby jack cheese and whole wheat bread. We cut it into little fingers and he'll feed himself. A dinner for him might be a mixture of barley and brown rice with sauteed ground turkey, kale and mushrooms. He gulped that meal right down. We stock lots of full fat, plain yogurt and hard boiled eggs (yolks only) for him too and he'll eat cottage cheese. Actually, I'm not sure we've found anything he's refused. We don't actually use a lot of jarred food anyway but over the next few months, we should stop altogether according to the doc. So strange to think that in just 3 short months, Chase will be off formula and baby food!

She was also really surprised and impressed that he's drinking out of a straw. I'm starting to think he actually prefers it over the sippy cup. The one funny thing about it is that we have to squeeze some water up out of the straw before he'll start sucking on it. Otherwise, I don't think he realizes that there's water in there. Once he feels the water, away he goes.

And we continue to be very lucky on the sleep front. He's on a pretty good schedule now and even with this 3rd tooth, I've only had to get up and soothe him to sleep one night. Otherwise, it's been 7:30 to 6:30/7:00 like clockwork (unless we're out late for some reason). Now the 1st tooth was another matter altogether. I don't want to re-live that again. Knocking on wood.

Other things we learned:
  • They now recommend 2% milk beginning between 11 and 13 months. There's enough trouble with childhood obesity without whole milk she said.
  • Whenever we run out of formula after 11 months is when we can start milks. Just no need to repurchase. Switch cold turkey.
  • No more than 25 oz of milk a day; less is great. They usually worry more about kids getting too much rather than too little. If they don't eat much solid foods, she prefers to give it to them between meals; if they eat solids without issue, she's fine if you serve with food.
  • Since we don't have flouride in our water (WTH?), we're to give Chase flouride drops every day. Shouldn't give with cows milk because the milk binds the flouride.
  • The longer you face kids backwards in the car seat the better; but some kids start to get car sick facing backwards as they get older; car seats differ but many require you face the seat forwards once the kid is 30 lbs; otherwise, turn them around when their legs get to cramped facing backwards.

Splish Splash

Nothing excites this kid more than getting to take a bath. He comes running for water. I love this video; I laugh every time I watch it.

More teeth & an evening with Chase

Latest news:

Chase seems to be teething again. Monday night, he seemed to be getting the sniffles and a raspy voice. Tuesday, he gets a fever and Zlatka tells us he's teething again. He had colds each time his first two teeth came in and it didn't occur to me until this morning that these events might be linked. A bunch of people have since told me that their kids too had colds when they were teething. It makes me wonder if teething causes colds for some reason or if these are really not colds but cold-like symptoms. Anyone know? One friend even said that her son always got ear infections with teeth. Eek, I really hope Chase won't go through that! The poor guys seems miserable enough already with swollen eyes and runny nose. He's still pretty happy despite it though. I've had a couple of really busy days at work with a business dinner so it's lovely to come home to see his sweet smiling face - runny nose and all.

And I thought the grandparents would enjoy this video. It's a couple of minutes long but you'll see him really practicing his new funny face (the head-down-look-at-you-from-the-top-of-his-eyes look), see him pick out books and torture Wolfie. This is essentially the time we spend in his room before getting him ready for bed.

Fun new things

A quick update for the grandparents who seem to be going through withdrawals after the holidays:

I think I mentioned how much Chase loves the shower. Now if one of us is in the shower when he comes into our bathroom, he'll scream in excitement and if he's come on his own power, he will speed-crawl towards it hoping to get in. If he's meant to shower, I'll catch him to strip him down before he crawls in. Otherwise, we've begun putting a laundry basket in front of the door to block his way. He's also begun crawling into his own bathroom and will pull himself up in front of the tub and scream and bang his hands on it as if to say "turn it on!" I need to get it on video. We think it's just hilarious.

He's also continuing to crack us up with this funny faces. Chris has started calling him Zoolander. He's starting to do it on demand for us. Here's a quick video of "Le Tigre"... I've also just posted a pic of his loving sideways look.

Tonight, he was given a collapsable tunnel by my co-worker. At first, he wasn't so sure about it but as soon as I looked at him from the other end, he crawled right in and out the other side. He spent a good part of tonight going in and out of that tunnel. Of course, Chris has begun the tunnel jokes again. Har har. A few pictures of that along with some fun new pictures his nanny took of him and Taylor today posted as well.

Chase's 1st Christmas and 8 months old

We've had way too much fun since I've last been able to post an entry so I won't be able to capture it all now. It's too bad since I tend to depend on this blog to update Chase's physcial baby book :( In any case, it's been a fulfilling month. Just a few highlights:

  • "All I want for Christmas are my 2 front teeth": Santa delivered early. Soon after his first tooth popped, the 2nd one started pushing its way up. (Popped on 12/8) Chase was again crankier than normal but definitely not as unhappy as he was with the first one. He now has two real teeth on the bottom and looks too darn cute. He seems to enjoy them too - he'll bite down on Kix or Cheerios with them and smile when he hears the crunch!
  • Speedy, speedy, speedy: Once he figured out how to crawl forward, he never went backwards again - which is a shame because he also climbs any set of stairs he can get his greedy little hands and knees on and I'd like him to learn how to go back down them backwards. Instead, he will drive right down head-first. The baby gates are up. He's also really darn fast on two feet if he's pushing something. He'll push anything and can cover a room in seconds. Sometimes he forgets he isn't supposed to stand unsupported yet and will stand hands-free for a few seconds before sitting himself down. We're bracing for the day he takes his first step... chris is thinking about putting weights on his ankles.
  • La Tigre: Chase has developed the funniest darn expressions. Such personalithy! He'll tilt his head down and stare up at you disapprovingly; or he'll tilt his head to the side, look up and smile adoringly; and his latest one is sitting back suddenly with a little shake of his head and look at you like he's surprised. It's hilarious. One will come right after another like he's just trying them on for size. Part of me wonders if Chris or I do this often enough that he's mimicing. We need to capture them on video.
  • Applause please: Chase has been knocking two toys together to make noise for a couple months now but over the past month, he's perfected the open handed clap. He had the grandparents wrapped around his little finger - he'd do something (anything), look at them and smile and then clap clap clap. Of course, they'd laugh and clap clap clap for him. He has everyone trained.
  • Fisting cereal: Chase has been pretty good about using a spoon to get food in his mouth if we put food on the spoon for him. But he's been enjoying finger foods even more now that he's figured out how to pick them up and get them into his mouth. He got the hang of it the week before Christmas. He's developed this "modified pincher" grasp. The Cheerio or whatever will start off between his thumb and finger but he somehow moves it up to the top of his closed fist and pops it in from there. He's got about a 75% success rate so far.
  • Baby signs: We've been doing a few basic baby signs with Chase and he seems to recognize a few now: milk, eat, water. Chris and I both need to be more consistent so he'll sign back but I'm feeling pretty encouraged so far.
  • More bathtime please: Ever since he learned to sit, bathtime has been a treat. And now he's figured out how to crawl into our shower (frameless door has no resistance). He goes in whenever he can and will sit there happily playing while one of us showers.
  • Learning cups: Speaking of water, Chase has mastered the sippy cup and loves water. We haven't given him juice yet and don't really see a need to. He's also now pretty good at drinking straight from a cup but we need to hold it for him. He just this weekend figured out how to get water up out of a straw for the first time so we'll begin to give him his straw cups to practice on now. I've read that straws are prefered by dentists over sippy cups in the long run - anyone know the truth about that?
  • Lots of food: I really want to avoid raising a picky eater so I'm really happy that thus far, Chase hasn't turned his nose up at anything we've given him. I realizes that this all will change when he hits toddlerhood but I'm enjoying while I can. He's already tried so many different foods: brocolli, melon, mango, pork, turkey, zucchini... he even liked cottage cheese. It's amazing to me that he'll be off formula in just 3.5 months and will be eating regular meals like the rest of us!
  • First snow: Chase was fasinated by the snow that hit on 12/17. He sat in his highchair for a long while looking out the back doors. Even though it was cold, he was fascinated while crawling around in it - until he went to rub his eyes and rubbed cold snow onto his face :) He sure did look cute in his snow suit though. Who could have guessed that what started as a pretty snowfall would soon turn Washington and Oregon into such a mess? Over 15 inches in our front yard, 20 inch snow drifts in the backyard, almost 2 feet at Chris' mom's house on Pete's Mountain. I wish I'd been better about taking pictures of it all.
  • First sled ride: Chase's grandpa Wayne bought a sled just for Chase so when we got to Portland for our holiday break, Chase got to go for a ride. He seemed more bewildered than anything else but at least he wasn't scared. Given the 2 straight weeks of snow, Chase has gotten used to wearing hats and doesn't mind them.
  • First Christmas: We reinstated the Hanschka Holiday Roadshow for Chase's 1st holiday season. All the grandparents wanted to see him of course so we hit Portland/West Linn, Eugene and Sunriver. It was quite a trip but Chase did amazingly well. He's so good in the car - he really only got upset twice: once at about 4.5 hours into our 6 hour drive from Sammamish to Tualatin during the crazy snow storm (without Chris) and the 2nd time when his diaper leaked on our drive from Eugene to Sunriver. Can't blame the kid in either case. Over the course of the many xmas celebrations, Chase watched us open a ton of presents for him. So many fun toys and cute clothes from loving friends and family. He now has 6 "vehicles" parked in his "classroom" here at home. For him, I think his favorite parts of Christmas are the tree ornaments, lights and ribbons :) Such a special Christmas - I'm so happy that we were able to share it with all the grandparents.
  • We (heart) SeaPort Air: Because Chase and I had plans to drive down to Portland earlier than Chris was able to leave work, he had a confirmed seat on Amtrak before the snow hit. But the trains were not running with any dependability so he booked himself a flight on newish SeaPort Air. What a great service! From Boeing Field to Flightcraft in Portland -- no security lines, no baggage hassels, no crazy parking fees. We'd do it again in a second.
  • First overnight without Chase: Chris and I left Chase with his PoPo overnight while we stayed downtown at The Nines for NYE. We met the Emmetts and Alfreys for dinner at El Goucho and then waited for the new years countdown at the (very strange) bar at The Nines. PoPo did a great job with Chase, even following my neurotically typed out instructions :) Surprisingly, neither Chris and I were nervous about leaving him. I guess we knew he was in good hands.
  • Welcoming Cameron Jeffrey: While this isn't really related to the holidays or Chase, I can't forget how fun it was to visit Cameron on his birthday. I've missed all other friends' births so this was really fun. Lisa looked incredible for having just had a baby and Cameron, well, he's just perfect. Health and happiness to Lisa, Jeff, big sister Makenna and little baby Cameron!

Now that the holiday is over, we're looking forward to getting back into the rhythem of everyday life. Chase stayed on his regular schedule up until the very last couple of days of our roadtrip and after a weekend at home is just about back on track. He's back with his nanny tomorrow and I hope doesn't give her a hard time. He's spent a lot of time with me the past couple of weeks and I'm crossing my fingers that he doesn't decide now is the time to develop separation anxiety. And since it's snowing and sticking AGAIN, I'm also crossing my fingers that Zlatka is able/willing to drive up the plateau in the morning!

Hope to have pictures posted soon.

Who put Baby in the corner?

I just came across these pictures of Chase when he first started crawling backwards. He backed himself into his bookcase and got so frustrated. I'm not sure how he aimed himself so perfectly but you can see how upset he was. Of course, Chris and I had to snap a couple of pics before coming to the rescue. I'm sure he'll remind us of this when he's older - I can't help but laugh now.
